    • During his youth, Sam carried out extensive research into the family of the Gaon of Vilna. In the 1960s he prepared a family tree of the families Penchuk, Palefsky and Bayuk, tracing their descent to Rabbi Moshe of Pinsk, a son-in-law of the Gaon of Vilna.
